Client: Petroleum Development Oman / UIB
Service: Pavement survey and root cause analysis
Value of works: €8 million
Year: 2018
TASK:
Severe distress across an operating airfield, traced back through more than twenty specialist laboratory tests to an incorrect renovation carried out years earlier. The client needed to know why the pavement at Fahud was failing, and Air Alliance was asked for a full survey of airfield pavement condition and an investigation into the root causes. Every root cause was identified, a renovation strategy recommended with a design PCN calculated against expected traffic, and a preliminary bill of quantities prepared.
Focus
- Ground penetrating radar survey for pavement thickness and layer composition
- DCP testing to evaluate subgrade CBR
- HWD testing along the runway centreline and four further alignments
- Coring of runway and taxiways for laboratory testing of materials
- More than twenty specialist laboratory tests on pavement and bituminous mix

- Identification of every root cause of the observed distress
- Recommended renovation strategy with design PCN against expected traffic
- Preliminary bill of quantities and cost estimates
- Preliminary construction phasing plan
