DETAILS:
Airport: Privately operated island airfield
Client: LC&Partners
Service: Survey, preliminary and detailed design — pavement rehabilitation and certification support
Value of works: €6 million
Standard: FAA pavement standards, ICAO Code B stand layout
Year: 2018
TASK:
An island airfield at the end of its pavement design life, rebuilt to FAA standards and brought up to the aeronautical standards required for certification. Topographic survey, heavy weight deflectometer testing and laboratory testing of pavement cores established that the existing pavement had reached the end of its design life and had to be replaced rather than repaired. Apron pavement was specified in a material chosen to resist the fuel and oil spillage that would otherwise attack a bituminous surface, and the construction plan set out options for complete closure and for partial night closure, so the operator could choose how to absorb the works.
Focus
- Full review of aeronautical infrastructures for civil aviation authority compliance and certification
- Topographic survey, HWD testing and laboratory testing of pavement cores
- Analysis of survey results and updated traffic forecast from historical data
- Flexible pavement design for runway, taxiway and apron
- Spill-resistant material specified for the apron
- ACN and PCN values calculated
- Complete materials specification to FAA standards
- Markings, signs and AGL reviewed, with solar runway holding position lights
- New apron stand layout for ICAO Code B self-manoeuvring operations
- Bills of quantities and provision of specifications
- Staged construction plan with full and partial night closure options
