TASK:
Finding and designing a dedicated airside area where unit load devices could be stocked quickly and safely, within convenient reach of ground operations. Under a framework agreement with Aeroporti di Roma, Air Alliance was asked to identify and design a new area for stocking aircraft ULDs. The area had to sit at a workable distance from ground operations and allow every type of ULD to be stocked quickly, safely and without damage, and options were developed and tested with stakeholders before one was taken forward. A traffic analysis established the stocking capacity required from aircraft mix, peak hour schedules, airline requirements and ULD turnaround times. Mechanical, automated and multi-storey systems were all studied, and a single-level arrangement was selected as the one that would keep operations simplest.
Focus
- Topographic survey combined with ground penetrating radar to map underground utilities

- Identification of a suitable area at convenient distance from ground operations
- Development and testing of several options with the stakeholders
- Comparison of mechanical, automated and multi-storey stocking systems
- Single-level layout selected to keep operations simplest
- Storm water drainage
- Flood lighting
