Brindisi Airport – overall upgrade and refurbishment (2016)
15 June 2016
Rome Fiumicino – airside vehicles control facilities (2016)
16 November 2016
DETAILS:
Airport traffic: 0.5 mil pax/year
Client: 3TI Engineering, for AZVI Group
Service: Detailed design — upgrade of Runway 09-27, Taxiway B and apron
Value of works: €11.5 million
Standard: EASA regulations
Year: 2015
TASK:
A full airfield upgrade delivered in forty-five days without closing the airport, after a value engineering exercise chose the strategy that made it possible. Rising traffic — driven in particular by low-fare carriers — and the need to comply with new EASA regulations had both made the work necessary. The defining constraint was that the airport had to keep operating, which meant identifying the refurbishment strategy that minimised closure, and that in turn depended on knowing precisely what the existing pavement layers could offer. With the pavement design settled, layout, profiles, sections, ground lighting and markings followed, and a very detailed staging plan allowed construction to be completed in forty-five days without impacting traffic.
Focus
- Ground penetrating radar to assess the thickness of each pavement layer
- Coring at selected points for laboratory testing, with DCP for subgrade CBR
- HWD testing for elastic moduli and residual life
- Design trials across several material combinations in FAARFIELD and COMFAA
- Pavement PCN evaluation
- Runway, taxiway and apron layout, profiles and sections
- Rigid and flexible pavement design
- Airfield ground lighting and markings
- Bills of quantities
- Value engineering to identify the optimal cost solution
- Detailed staging plan for construction within a live airport
