DETAILS:
Airport traffic: 2.4 mil pax/year
Client: Systra Sotecni S.p.A., for ADP S.p.A.
Service: Preliminary design — phase one of the complete airfield upgrade
Value of works: €12.5 million (whole programme)
Reference code: ICAO Code C, D and E
Year: 2015–2016
TASK:
Two runways, the taxiway system and a new general aviation apron — with the threshold moved to clear ships in the harbour below. Brindisi is the second largest airport in Puglia and its traffic has grown steadily for a decade on the back of low-cost expansion. To keep pace, and to bring its airside facilities into full compliance with current EASA regulations, the operator sought a specialist consultant to design an overall upgrade of both runways, 05-23 and 13-31, the taxiway system, and a new general aviation apron. This first phase began with a complete topographic survey, followed by a detailed analysis of the existing infrastructure and its non-compliances. The obstacle environment shaped the outcome: an aeronautical study developed options to avoid infringement of the protection surfaces — the difficulty being ships in the adjacent commercial harbour — and led to displacing Threshold 31.
Focus
- Complete topographic survey of the airside areas
- Analysis of existing infrastructure and non-compliances with standards
- Aeronautical obstacle analysis, including shipping in the adjacent commercial harbour
- Options to avoid infringement of the protection surfaces, leading to displacement of Threshold 31
- Runway thresholds and declared distances
- Ground manoeuvring simulation for Code C, D and E aircraft
- Design of taxiways and a new general aviation apron
- Review of runway profiles, drainage and pavement design against expected traffic
- Markings, signs and LED airfield ground lighting
- Review of the low voltage network and substations
- Preliminary cost estimates
