Rome Fiumicino – airside vehicles control facilities (2016)
16 November 2016
Muscat International Airport (Oman)
19 July 2017
DETAILS:
Airport traffic: 12 mil pax/year
Client: Sering International, for the Royal Flight of Oman
Service: Specialist surveys and pavement evaluation
Value of works: €15 million
Reference code: ICAO Code F
Year: 2017
TASK:
Four instrumented survey techniques used together to establish what the existing pavement could carry, what lay beneath it, and the most economical route to Code F. Before a refurbishment strategy could be chosen, the client needed to know what the existing pavement was actually capable of. Air Alliance recommended and carried out the survey work across the aprons and taxiways, including shoulders and ground lighting, and mapped the buried services so that construction would not strike them later. Thickness was established by ground penetrating radar calibrated against cores, and deflection was measured with a Dynatest 8082 heavy weight deflectometer applying up to 320 kN through a 300 mm plate, with the response recorded by nine geophones.
Focus
- Coring through the pavement to sample materials and confirm layer thickness
- Dynamic cone penetrometer testing to evaluate subgrade CBR
- Ground penetrating radar for continuous layer scanning and utility detection
- Heavy weight deflectometer testing for bearing strength and residual life
- Layer-by-layer thickness model of the whole investigated area
- Blow penetration, DCP index and evaluated CBR
- Map of existing underground utilities
- Existing conditions report and proposed renovation strategy
- Optimised pavement upgrading strategy with cost/benefit comparison
