Royal Flight Apron (Oman)
15 February 2017
Salalah International Airport (Oman)
19 July 2017
DETAILS:
Planned Traffic: 24 mil pax/year (48 mil at full build-out)
Client: 3TI Engineering, for Hill International and the Oman Ministry of Transportation
Service: Preliminary and detailed design for the reconfiguration and upgrade of the Southern Airfield to ICAO Code F
Value of works: €94 million
Reference code: ICAO Code F
Year: 2015–2016
TASK:
A complete redesign of Runway 08R–26L and its taxiway system, dimensioned for the largest aircraft in service and for an airport growing from 12 to 48 million passengers a year. The airfield had to absorb rapid traffic growth while meeting current ICAO standards for Code F aircraft: obstacle infringements were removed by displacing the threshold, the runway was extended to 4,080 m, and capacity was raised through a new taxiway layout with eight rapid exit taxiways — together with full pavement refurbishment, new storm water drainage and a new LED airfield ground lighting system.
Focus
- Analysis of the aeronautical obstacle survey, with new runway thresholds and declared distances
- Topographic survey of the whole area to WGS-84 UTM 40 standards
- Ground penetrating radar to map existing utilities and assess pavement thickness
- DCP testing of the subgrade to establish CBR values
- Heavy weight deflectometer testing for elastic moduli, residual life and PCN
- Displacement of Threshold 26L and recalculation of declared distances
- Runway extended to 4,080 m
- High-capacity taxiway layout introducing eight Rapid Exit Taxiways (RET)
- Runway longitudinal and transverse profiles brought into compliance
- Rigid and flexible pavement design for the expected traffic mix, with specifications
- Runway strip grading and new runway end safety areas
- Storm water drainage sized on calculated runoff, tapped into the existing network
- Visual aids: markings, signage, PAPI siting, ILS localiser and glide path civils
- New LED AGL system with primary and secondary networks, monitoring, ALCMS and substations
- Technical specifications and bills of quantities
- Aerodrome certification check-list according to Oman CAR 139
