New Oman Air Cabin Crew Reporting Terminal (Oman)
19 July 2017
DETAILS:
Traffic: 2 mil pax/year
Client: LC&P, for Galfar
Service: Pavement design
Value of works: €4 million
Reference code: ICAO Code F
Year: 2016
TASK:
A 45 m wide runway with two different pavement types, a poor surface and a sound foundation — reused rather than replaced, at the lowest cost that met the standard. Completing the airside infrastructure at the new Salalah airport meant connecting the military apron to the new Runway 07-25, and Air Alliance was asked for the specialist design to convert the old runway into a new Code F Taxiway “G”. The old strip carried rigid pavement at the thresholds and flexible pavement through the central section, and although its surface condition was poor the foundation beneath was still sound. Survey established the traffic mix and volumes expected and the condition of each existing layer, design trials tested several material combinations in FAARFIELD and COMFAA, and a value engineering exercise identified the best solution at the optimal cost.
Focus
- Ground penetrating radar survey to establish the thickness of each pavement layer
- Coring at selected points for laboratory testing
- DCP tests for subgrade CBR evaluation
- Heavy weight deflectometer testing for elastic moduli and residual life
- Design trials across several material combinations in FAARFIELD and COMFAA
- Pavement design and renovation options for the two existing pavement types
- Value engineering to identify the optimal cost solution
- Upgrading strategy sized to keep disruption to operations to a minimum
